Stratford Opens Tourney on Winning Note

Stratford Memorials Midget defeated the Quebec 2 team, 4 -1 in their opening game at the Eastern Canadian Fastball Championship in St, Gervais Quebec. Winning Pitcher Matt Walsh gave up 5 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 8 and walking only 1 batter.

The Memorials offence struck for 10 hits scattered over the 7 innings. Tim Ruston and Mark Verkley both tripled, while Walsh helped his own cause with two singles. Jon Hood and Cody Bromley and Travis Jones all added doubles while Jon Woodend singled.

Saturdays schedule see Stratford face Kitchener/Waterloo at 9am and New Brunswick at 8PM.

An interesting side note is the ball diamonds in Quebec have no grass on the outfield like most diamonds. The outfields are covered in stone dust the same as the infields making the outfield play differently than usual.
